I have read many books over the years. These include many weight loss books but also include general self help books. On this page I have listed the very best books. The books that have taught be something that I have kept with me and used every day since. I hope you find these books as helpful as I have.

Please Note: I highly recommend you buy these books on Kindle or Audible. Lately I have been getting more and more into environmental issues and any way to reduce the creation of ‘products’ that use the planets resources is going to help. These media formats are downloaded and use no resources and are therefore better for the environment. You can also buy second hand or borrow from the library. 

The Obesity Code

This is for me the single most important weight loss book there is. We have all heard that to lose weight you need to eat less and exercise more. Yet so many fail. In this book Dr Jason Fung (the author) looks in detail at why eating less and exercising more fails. He also offers up what we should really be doing instead. It will open your eyes to how the body really works and when you put it into practice you will find weight loss a lot easier. I originally got this book as a paperback but when I discovered Audible I got it again so I could listen to it as I went for a walk or a run. It was very motivating. A MUST BUY FOR DIETERS.




Atomic Habits

Written by James Clear this books is fantastic for helping you to change your life one baby step at a time. What I like about this book is that it explains why so many of us who are trying to change our lives fail. It then takes that and breaks it down into steps that will work. When you listen to the book it seems quite straight forward yet it clearly isn’t or people would be doing it already. I used this book to help me firstly with weight loss but secondly to get back into running. Little steps every day compound into giant results. Can’t Hurt Me

A great book which I actually listened to on Audible. Written by David Goggins it tells his story from an abused child right through Navy Seal Training including three hell weeks, Ultra Marathons and a world record in pulls ups. It is a truly inspiring story that you cannot help but be moved and motivated by. I was pleased that I got this book on Audible. It got me so inspired that by the end of the book I was working out in my living room while I was listening to him. It is a story that will show you that there is so much more that you are capable of. You just need to get your mind working for you rather than against you. A MUST BUY.




Fat Chance

Written by Dr Robert Lustig a pediatric endocrinologist from the United States it explains perfectly how sugar is toxic. Actually it does far more than that. It explains how sugar is toxic, addictive and absolutely everywhere. This was the book that originally opened my eyes to the dangers of sugar. It was this book that convinced me that it was sugar that I needed to avoid and not simply count calories. (more about that in running for weight loss). If you do one thing it is remove sugar from your diet particularly sugary drinks. If you are looking to lose weight or improve your health this book is step one. Also check out the video on YouTube. Now viewed over 8 million times.




Why We Get Fat

After watching the YouTube clip mentioned above I found in the related videos a video by Gary Taubes  – click here to see. It lead me to this book – Why We Get Fat. Continuing on the theme of sugar and carbohydrates driving obesity it was another vital book in my education. It began to make sense to me based on what I was reading and what I had observed in my own weight loss journey. I once lost a stone in a month and could never work out how. This book helped me understand that. It has a good balance between going into the science without overwhelming the reader with complex stuff. That is probably why I liked it. I highly recommend it if you want to continue your weight loss education.




You Can Heel Your Life

As you will see on this site one of my challenged to improving my running has been sustained weight loss. I have always been an emotional eater which was the true cause beyond eating the sugary junk. This booked helped me to look at myself in a completely different way. The technique of analyzing people who annoy you to understand why was revolutionary.  It allowed me to understand myself on a level I never had and it began to help me stay relaxed, happy and content and therefore junk food free. After reading this book I began to focus on the things I did want rather than the things I didn’t. If you are an emotional eater or are unhappy with something but cannot work out what then give this book a go. It will shine a light on areas of yourself you didn’t even know existed.

Please note I will be adding more books to this list as and when I feel appropriate. I could add hundreds of books that I have found helpful over the years. I do however feel that it should be limited to just the very best books. The problem is that the more books I add the harder it is for the truly exceptional books to stand out. For that reason I do limit it a little.
